Following a Low Phosphorus Diet is only indicated if ordered by your doctor.

Phosphorus is a mineral that is needed by the bones, nerves, muscles, and brain. High phosphorus levels can lead to itchy skin and bones to become weak and painful.

Suggestions from the National Kidney Foundation: Ideas on how to substitute Low Phosphorus foods.

​Instead of High-Phosphorus Foods

1 cup milk (230mg)

1 cup cream soup made with milk (275mg)


1 oz. hard cheese (145mg)


1/2 cup ice cream (80mg)


12 oz. can cola (55mg)


1/2 peanuts (200mg)


1 1/2 oz. chocolate bar (125mg)


1/2 pudding or custard made with milk (150mg)

1/2 cup lima or pinto beans (100mg)​

​Try these Low-Phosphorus foods

​1 cup non-dairy creamer (100mg)


1 cup cream soup made with water (90mg)


1 oz. cream cheese (30mg)


1/2 cup sherbet or 1 Popsicle (0mg)


12 oz. non-cola,  ginger ale or lemon soda (3mg)


1 1/2 cups light salt/low fat popcorn (35mg)


1 1/2 oz. hard candy or jelly beans (3mg)


1/2 cup pudding or custard made with non-dairy creamer (50mg)

1/2 cup mixed vegetables or green beans (35mg)
